Powderham Castle

What is it about castles that are just so magical? Too many fairytales? Whatever it is, I want to see all of them.

Much like the temples in Thailand, castles are very unique with each having details unlike another. Some are plain and practical, others are loud and ostentatious. We’ve seen some that are pristine and others that have been neglected beyond repair. However, each has a history and I love to hear their stories.

Floor to ceiling shelves of books? Yes, please! The library alone was something of a treat, but when you add a hidden door to a secret staircase then a story unfolds.

The grandeur of this home was nothing less than amazing, but I’m not sure I would have wanted to be the person decorating. All the embellishments on these walls were made from plaster, each one with it’s own mold. It looked heavy and detailed and I was told it took several years to complete.

My favorite part of the whole house, however, was the kitchen. It was simply heavenly and had such a warm welcoming atmosphere.

I like finding the little details in things. This staircase was just charming. I did something similar to the stairs in a past home of ours, but this one is like looking back in time. I just love it.

The covered walkway to the deer park (yes, deer – you can see them in the middle image resting under the tree) was just too pretty not to take a picture of it. Future home goals: manicured hedges and my own nature preserve out back. A castle would be nice, too.

We had a lovely cream tea out front and then found some more interesting things around the castle grounds before heading to the bus stop to go home. Perhaps we should have waiting for the special Christmas time décor, but I thought it was a lovely afternoon.

This little guy said goodbye to us while we waited for the bus. A super cute way to finish the day and a distraction from playing the waiting game.
